- Hello World -
My name is Mary and I am an artist who likes bugs, things that bugs eat, and things that eat bugs.
I am fascinated by the natural world and the miniscule creatures that enable it to function. I am just as intrigued by our interactions with those creatures and with each other. I believe the way we interact with each other is a means for framing our relationships with all things. Using humor as a lens, I am exploring and articulating what it means to be human as a part of nature, not opposed to nature. Choosing to use humor as the device for examining these ideas is significant to me as well. Humans have historically used both tragedy and comedy as a means of processing their experiences. I believe the art of comedy is equally as crucial and aspire to make art that is both humorous and insightful.

The mediums that I work in are print and blown glass. These are both process oriented, which gives me the opportunity to learn something new with every piece I make. While I focus on thematic work when creating two dimensional pieces, my glass tends to be more oriented towards function. I believe creating beautiful and useful pieces out of glass is essential to practicing my craft and learning more about glass as a material. Recently I have begun to explore sculpting glass in order to create work that more aligns with the ideas I want to express through my artistic practice.
